Raksha Bandhan is a festival of pure love and joy. It commemorates the special relationship between siblings. Did you know that the word ‘Raksha’ means ‘protection’? And ‘Bandhan’ refers ‘to tie’ or ‘bond’. Sisters tie the rakhi threads around her brother's wrist. And the brother promises to protect his sister from any evils that may come to her. It is believed that the protection offered by the rakhi lasts for one year. So the festival and ceremony need to be repeated each year. The rakhis are always colourful and are decorated with coloured threads and even coloured beads and stones. This day is celebrated on the full moon day in the Hindu month of Shravan. It is an auspicious day for anyone who has a brother or sister. Increasingly nowadays, rakhi is also tied to cousins, sister in law (Bhabhi) and many other such relations which resemble siblinghood. It is a systematic ceremony, beginning with the sister applying tilak on the brother’s forehead and then tying the rakhi. An arati follows this by the sister, in which she prays for her brother’s health and safety. This is followed by an exchange of gifts and, of course, sweets! This is the traditional way of celebrating Raksha Bandhan. If you want to go for the healthier version, try opting for sugar-free sweets on rakhi.
